2 RACES AFTER A RAINSTORM

The last races of July were almost a rain-out, but after an hour or so waiting for the skies to clear, five Lightnings were able to rig in a light drizzle.  The rain stopped and we set off on an L1 course in a shifty 8-10knot easterly.   Daniel, with Maud and Andrew on board, was able to snag a first place by playing downwind shifts and staying to the right side of the downwind leg (north side and up current).   Peter, with Lauren and Penny crewing, was second.   Bob (with Jim and Jan) took an uncharacteristic third, followed by Tristan, his sister Annie, and Matt, finished fourth, and Ian, with guest crew Dan Parietti and Peter crewing, took the fifth slot.

The breeze built as we prepared for a second race, another L1 course with the windward leg now set at 105 degrees.   The breeze had freshened and the money move on the first leg was to start on starboard and let the current sweep you downriver to the mark.  Despite a few 20 degree shifts, Bob figured out the first leg but was followed closely by the fleet.   Going downwind, Bob and Daniel worked the left side of the river which paid handsomely when the breeze moved to the south, leaving the rest of the fleet in the dust.     Bob won the race with Daniel a close second (after doing circles at the finish line – a small port/starboard misunderstanding….), followed by Peter, Tristan, and Ian.

Kudos to Tristan’s crew Matt (FIRST TIME EVER ON A SAILBOAT!) and to Dick Leonard and the Mayos for showing up for the porch-sitting competition prior to racing, but deciding to sit this week’s racing out.   With good weather and little luck, maybe we are looking at 6+ boats on any given Sunday.
