2016 Last Chance Regatta Results
The Cruising Fleet hosted nineteen boats at the annual “Last Chance” regatta on October 1st and 2nd. The regatta is the last of six in the Hudson River Yacht Racing Association’s (HRYRA) series.
In recent years the racing in divisions has been so close that the Last Chance has decided the final standings. This year was no exception with Divisions 1 and 2 up for grabs at the start of the weekend.
Saturday was as good as it gets for Hudson River racing with Northeast winds at 10-15kts to begin the day diminishing to 8-12kts in the afternoon. The Race Committee led by Bob Shoemaker made the most of it with efficient turnaround of the divisions. Divisions 1 and 2 both got in four races and Divisions 3 and 4 got in three races. This turned out to be the right move as the wind was nowhere to be found on Sunday.
NBC fielded five boats racing in Divisions 1 and 4 and managed to keep some of the prizes in Nyack. Dave Otterbein’s Breakaway took 1st in Division 1 and Osman Kurtulus in Nerosh took first in Division 4. Matt Schlanger in The Office took 2nd in Division 4 and Eric Baumes in Hee Soo took 3rd in Division 1.
After racing competitors were treated to Oktoberfest with German themed food and premium beer from Defiant Brewery. Marco Moretti with Kieran Quinn led food preparation. Ruth Yannelli provided home made apple pies. Also special thanks to Paul Kisala who worked all day from registration to cleanup. Thanks also to Heidy Moretti, Robin Brown, Steve Sellinger, Judy Long, Stephanie Baumes, Deborah Hertzog and everyone else who helped out.
